Fixing Screen-tear

Post by bonten123 on Fri Jan 15, 2016 5:30 am

I've used a number of Linux Distros over the years and currently dual boot between ChaletOS and Zorin 9. I have no problems with Screen-tear while watching Videos using VLC in Zorin 9. But with ChaletOS the screen tears all of the time. Does anyone know how to overcome this?

Okay! Here's an update on this. It's not just VLC it's also flash videos when I go to full screen that have this problem. I've partially solved it. I altered the screen refresh rate from 60Hz to 59.9Hz. Now, I only have some tearing in the bottom half inch of the screen. So that's a big improvement.

OK. I've solved the the issue! It's a compositor problem. Here's what I did:

1. Go to Start/ Settings/ Windows manager Tweaks.
2. Go to “Compositor”Tab and untick  “Enable display compositing.
3. Either log out and back in again or restart.
4. Launch Synaptic Package manager and search for “Compton”. Mark for installation and click “Apply”.
5. Go to Start/ Settings/ Session and Startup
6. Click the “Application Autostart” tab
7. Click “Add”
8. In the window that appears write the following in Command: compton –backend glx –paint-on-overlay –vsync opengl-swc
9. In Name write Compton Compositor and in description Stop screen tear  (You can actually write anything you want in these lines) then click OK
10. Either log out and back in again or restart.
11. Everything should now be fine. You can check it out by going to YouTube and searching and then playing “Tearing Test”.

I have done what bonten has instructed. Twice in fact, but i still have screen tearing.
I notice it more than usually and chalked it up to bad streaming.
Is there any other way to fix this problem. I am using a monitor and not a laptop.

Command line with parameters no longer seems to work, as a compton.conf file needs to be created.

A good tutorial can be found here:

The only good thing about Windows is that it never gives you any terminal illnesses.
Needless to say, Terminal illnesses are the only problem with Linux.

No problem, however I would love to see this being added by default in the next major ChaletOS edition.

@DarkHawk I have a question for you: what version of chalet OS do you have? 16.04? 16.04.1? 16.04.2? 16.04.2 is the newest and best and has fixed a lot of problems. Thanks!

I installed ChaletOS 16.04.2 (at least that is what the label of the DVD states).

Is there a way to easily determine the real ChaletOS version?

Because when I run the 'lsb_release -a' command I only get:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

With 'uname -a':
Linux Edge-E530 4.4.0-34-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 27 16:06:39 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I downloaded the image last week so I'm sure it's Chalet 16.04.2, but I'd like to know how to determine this as well. Just curious how to check for future reference.
